Not every cat is meant for life on the couch—and that’s okay. For some cats, wide-open spaces, fresh air, and a job to do are exactly what help them thrive. Through Kitten Angels’ Barn Program, we connect cats who prefer outdoor living with safe, supportive environments where they can live happy, fulfilling lives as working cats.
Who Is Kitten Angels?
Kitten Angels is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned and orphaned kittens, pregnant cats, and mama cats throughout the New York Capital Region and surrounding areas. While many of the cats we rescue go on to become beloved indoor companions, others are better suited for life outdoors. For these cats, a barn, shed, garage, or warehouse can be the perfect home.
Our goal is simple: save lives and place every cat in an environment where they can succeed.
What Is a Working (Barn) Cat?

Working cats—often called barn cats—are independent, outdoor-oriented cats who may not be comfortable living indoors or being handled regularly. However, they still deserve safety, care, and stability. In return, they naturally help control rodents and pests, making them excellent partners for farms, barns, stables, and rural or semi-rural properties.
Why Adopt a Working Cat?
Adopting a working cat is a win-win—for you and the cat.
Eco-friendly pest control without poisons or traps
Ideal for barns, garages, sheds, and warehouses
Provides a safe home for cats who truly thrive outdoors
By welcoming a working cat, you’re giving them a second chance at life while supporting humane, sustainable pest management.
What Kitten Angels Provides
Every working cat adopted through Kitten Angels comes with essential veterinary care, including:
Spay or neuter surgery
Age-appropriate vaccinations
FELV/FIV testing
We make sure each cat is healthy and ready to transition to their new outdoor home.
What You Provide
To ensure success, working cats rely on consistent care and a safe environment. Adopters are asked to provide:
Shelter (such as a barn, shed, garage, or similar structure)
Daily food and fresh water
Basic care and monitoring to ensure the cat remains healthy
With these basics in place, most working cats settle in beautifully and become valued members of their new space.
Get Involved
If you have a barn, farm, or outdoor property and are interested in adopting a working cat, we’d love to hear from you. Together, we can create a balanced environment where both animals and people benefit.
